Hi! I’m Yasmine Hamdi: a 17 year old author, public speaker, advocate for human and animal rights, and world traveler.
I love seeing the incredible landscapes, meeting the amazing people and experiencing the rich culture of places around the world. Traveling has opened my eyes to so many different lifestyles and beliefs, and speaking four languages while being in possession of three different passports, I like to consider myself a citizen of the world.
I discovered my passion for writing at the young age of 7, and immediately began to write short stories. One rainy summer night in my apartment home of Brooklyn, I conquered boredom by getting started on what would later become my debut novel, Spirit of the Wind, at just 8 years old. It was published in August 2015 and since then, I've been on a crazy but wonderful adventure. I've been given so many great opportunities to share my voice with the world and meet the next generation of leaders.
Now, I write adventure stories for middle grade children, with important themes that raise awareness about current global issues, such as: wildlife conservation, children at war, world hunger, disease and poverty. These topics are introduced in a clear and understandable way for the younger audience, with plenty of likeable main characters and a fun-filled storyline that all readers are bound to enjoy.
In July 2017, I raised over $1,000 to support the education of refugee children. Then, I traveled to Northern Jordan to distribute critically-needed supplies to refugee families living in poverty, participate in school activities with refugee children and interview them about their lives before and after the war. Their stories of hope and resilience have forever inspired me. I plan to write my second book about the Syrian civil war, and share their stories with the world. I have recently partnered with TheSyriaFund to raise awareness about the refugee crisis and frequently share the photos and videos of my trip through social media and on various blogs, where they inspire hundreds of people to take action.
When I’m not writing, you can probably find me reading, surfing, skateboarding, spending time with my friends and family, or planning my next travel adventures.
I really want people to understand that we can all make a difference together. I want to encourage my fellow travelers to give back when they travel, and get involved in volunteering projects or charity work while abroad. I also want to inspire children to look after the planet and take care of wildlife. My dream is that every reader will put down my book feeling empowered and encouraged to follow their own dreams, regardless of their age or gender.
Be brave, bold, and believe in your power to change the world.
